Last week, we have joined a competition; MYGOSSCON or Malaysia Government Open Source Software Conference – International Creative Multimedia Development Competition
The challenge is to use open source software to make videos. For us, it is something new to explore since before this, most of the time we do rely on the proprietary software such as Adobe products and Sony Vegas etc. Of course, we still use the proprietary software in this project, but yeah, we still used some open source software as some of it were listed here.
Basically in my opinion video editing using open source software should not be a problem. Most of the video editing software out there performs basic function such as cutting, arranging clips and so on. It doesn’t make any difference when you use open source video editing software because the fundamentals of the video editing is just the same compared to others.
However there are still a lot of the open source software that really shines out of the proprietary software such as blender. If you are familiar with the 3D, you will know blender of course. Some of the movies that you know, Avatar 3D, Titanic, you name it, were rendered using open source environment too. The Avatar 3D specifically was rendered using enormous Ubuntu server farm

The high power server farm used to render many films computer generated imagery (including Avatar), shown with its advanced water cooling system.
In the case of Avatar, each minute of rendering equates to approximately 17.28GB of data.
This explains the future of the open source.
Well, let me share with you our video submission during MYGOSSCON International Creative Multimedia Development Competition few weeks back. This video was made based on stop motion video concept, with thousands of pictures taken and combined in a video editing software.
Music was composed by @faristweeter and all the sound effects were recorded using Zoom H4N .
Kudos to the team, motiodesign and theseplay!
